Hey, y'all! I've spent a lot of time with my nieces this summer. Since I'm a teacher, I'm off when they are so I get to spend loads of time corrupting them while my brother and sister-in-law work. One of my favorite things to do is get them all sugared up and then send them home. Aren't I the sweetest?
The other day Monster (the 3 1/2-year-old) wanted some chocolate milk. Now, I don't have much of a sweet tooth (although Ashley does!) so we don't really buy things like chocolate syrup. So, instead of running off to the store, I decided I would make my own! How hard could it be, right?
Ingredients:
1 cup of water 1 cup of sugar 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1/2 tsp corn starch 1/4 tsp salt 1 tbsp vanilla
Instructions:
Place water, sugar, and salt into a sauce pan. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves.
Turn the stove on high and bring to a boil. Once you have reached a rapid boil, allow the sugar water to boil for one minute.
Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool for 15 minutes
Stir in vanilla, cocoa powder and corn starch.
Return to the stove and allow the mixture to come back to a boil. Continue to boil for 1 minute and then remove from the heat.
Pour into a 1 pint mason jar and store in your refrigerator.
This deliciousness tastes just like Hershey's Syrup without all of the GMO's and additives. It not only makes scrumptious chocolate milk but it also tastes delicious on a brownie or as an ice cream topping. Be sure to shake or stir the mixture before you store since the chocolate has a tendency of settling. The mixture will thicken once it is chilled, however, if you like your syrup a little thicker, you can always reheat it and add more corn starch.
I hope you enjoy this homemade alternative to store-bought chocolate syrup. Be sure to like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter for more yummy recipes!
