Monster Rice Krispie Treats

Break out the marshmallows and candy melts and have a blast creating these yummy and totally spooky Monster Rice Krispie Treats!

Hey, y'all! Last weekend I was trapped in the house with 5 kids under 5. You see, every other weekend our former foster kiddos come to hang with our current 3 foster children. You can imagine how crazy things get when it's pouring down rain and you're stuck indoors with a 5-year-old, a 4-year-old, a set of nearly 2-year-old twins and a 1-year-old. Typically when the kids come over we break out the ball pit, bounce house, or pools and hang out in the backyard all day. Clearly, that wasn't an option.

I decided I was going to bake with the older 2 while the babies all took a nap. 4 used to love baking when he lived with us. Last year we made Rice Krispie Pumpkins and Spooky Rice Krispie Treats. This year I wanted to continue with the Rice Krispie theme and make something new- Monster Rice Krispie Treats.

This turned out to be the perfect project for 4 and 5! They had an absolute blast dipping the Rice Krispie Treats in the candy melts and decorating them with candy eyes.

Since we had a handful of baking projects we were going to complete that day, I used prepackaged Rice Krispie Treats as a shortcut. I unwrapped the treats and cut them in half and let the kids go to town with the decorating.

The ingredients below include what you'll need to purchase if you want to make the treats from scratch. If you want to use the short cut, you'll just need to pick up some candy melts and candy eyes.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup butter

5 cups miniature marshmallows

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

6 cups Rice Krispie Cereal

Candy Melts (in assorted colors)

Instructions:

  1. In a large sauce pan over low heat, melt butter. Add marshmallows and stir until the marshmallows have completely melted.

  2. Remove from heat. Add in the vanilla, and cereal. Stir until all of the cereal is completely coated.

  3. Spray a 13x9 pan and a spatula with non-stick spray. Use the spatula to press the mixture into the pan. Allow the mixture to cool before cutting.

  4. Melt the candy melts in the microwave according to package instructions.

  5. Dip the Rice Krispie treats into the melted candy melts and add eyes.

  6. Allow the melts to harden before serving.
