Don't toss out your leftover pie dough! These Dessert "Pigtails" are a clever to utilize up your leftover dough.
Hey, y'all! I bet your gag reflex activated when you read the phrase "pigtails", didn't it? Seriously y'all, have I ever steered you wrong before? Relax, it's just a little treat made from leftover pie dough.
One of my favorite family holiday traditions is gathering in the kitchen with my mom and my two oldest nieces to bake zillions of goodies for our holiday meals. My nieces, Frankenstein and Monster, love helping out in the kitchen almost as I love the fact that we're raising another generation of girls that love to cook and bake!
Our first baking session is always the day before Thanksgiving. We bake bread (traditionally pumpkin, cinnamon apple and cranberry orange), pies (pumpkin, apple, and pecan), and more cookies than I can even begin to list. We also get together a couple other times afterward to bake Christmas cookies. Baking is such a fun way for the three generations of girls to bond. Frankenstein loves learning how to recreate family recipes and Monster loves devouring as many of the ingredients and treats as she can.
To help curb Monster's appetite, my mom started creating little "pigtails" for her to nibble on while we bake. Pigtails couldn't be any easier to make. You simply use a knife or a pizza cutter to slice pie dough into little strips. Wrap the dough loosely around your finger to create a spiralized effect.
In a shallow dish, combine 1/4 cup of sugar with 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon. Roll the spiralized dough in the cinnamon sugar mixture and place them on a baking sheet.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 6 - 8 minutes.
Drizzle with an icing made from a combination of confectionery sugar and water.
These yummy little guys are an irresistible treat to munch on while you're baking and an excellent way to utilize any leftover pie dough that you may have.
