When you plan a trip, it’s always tempting to go to the most popular destinations in a particular country. You might gravitate towards the capital city of a certain nation, for example. And there’s nothing wrong with traveling in that way. Often, you’ll find the best sights in a country’s capital. Still, many tourists neglect plenty of fascinating destinations when they go on trips. There are many overlooked cities that get visited but not nearly as much as others in the same countries. This list of often-overlooked cities has been compiled for explorers who want to travel to destinations which are a little less crowded than some of the more popular cities in certain countries. Of course, that doesn’t make these destinations any less special.
Seattle, America.
If you want to visit an exciting city, then you should pay a visit to Seattle in Washington. This might not be as popular as destinations such as Los Angeles and New York, but don’t be fooled into thinking that Seattle has less to offer. This city is a bustling and ever-changing hub of wondrous things to see and do. It has an impressive skyline, with iconic landmarks (such as The Space Needle, which you should definitely ascend if you want to be treated to spectacular views of the city), but what else does Seattle have to offer?
Well, you should start by exploring Pike Place Market, which has been mentioned on this blog before. This vast marketplace started as a tiny farmers’ market. It’s much more than that in the present day. You’ll find farmers who sell fresh produce, but you’ll also find artists selling creative products and services. You’ll find all manner of small businesses selling intriguing goods. It would be great to tell you about everything that can be bought there, but Pike Place Market is ever-changing, and it’s full of unique things that are easy to overlook. So, look around whilst you’re in Seattle. You could buy everything from your groceries to vintage antiques.
York, England.
When people think of England, they usually think of London. That makes sense. It’s the capital, and it’s a vast city with many things to see and do. However, despite England’s small size, it is a nation that is packed with amazing cities. York is a prime example. It might not be as modern and glitzy as London, but it has a beautiful heritage. You’ll be treated to plenty of stunning buildings, such as York Cathedral, which is known as York Minster. It’s not only one of the largest of its kind in England but one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. This famous landmark is only one aspect of what this city has to offer, however.
You should do some research to make sure you take a trip here when some fantastic York events are on. If you visit at the very beginning of February, you could attend the York Ice Trail. Nobody enjoys winter, but if you’re going to travel at that time of year, then York will deliver with this event. You’ll be able to admire 50 ice sculptures along this trail. Of course, not every York-based activity is seasonal. You could try ax-throwing at The Hilt, for example. This is an incredibly popular event, and it’s worth trying out whilst you’re in the city. Don’t worry; this Viking-themed activity is supervised and made safe. It’s an adventure that’s worth taking, so you should put it on your to-do list whilst you’re in York.
Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Dubrovnik is another fantastic destination that you simply have to visit. It’s not always the first option that people pick when exploring Croatia, but that’s been changing over recent years. This is partly due to the Old Town serving as the location of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, the hit TV show. In any case, the city gains tourists with every passing year, so you should make a trip there before it becomes even more crowded. Dubrovnik is a mesmerizing city. The Old Town looks as spectacular as it does in Game of Thrones. Hardly any editing was needed, as you’ll find out if you take one of the Game of Thrones walking tours (which also offers intriguing historical facts, but you could take a history tour, too). This medieval city is so well-preserved. Of course, the insides of its historic buildings have been updated. You’ll find many wonderful restaurants and hotels within the walls of the Old Town. There are many things to see outside of those walls, as well. Fort Lovrijenac, as well as being a Game of Thrones setting, is a stunning landmark in Dubrovnik. Venture to the top of it so you can admire the Old Town from an awesome vantage point. There is so much to experience in this wonderful city.
