If you would never go on holiday without your dog, you might be planning on taking them on a road trip of camping. Dogs are used to the same smells and environment, and big changes can knock them off their balance, no matter how hard you try to comfort them. This is why you pack for them as carefully as you would for your kids, so they can enjoy the getaway without missing the usual accessories, activities, and smell.
Favorite Toys
If you would like to keep your dog happy and calm during the journey, it is important that you pack some of their favorite toys. In case you are going by car with your dog, keep it in their safe kennel, so they can smell home, and feel less out of place while you are traveling. You might also want to pack their favorite bed if you are getting a dog friendly accommodation, so they can stay with you.
Feeding Station
No matter if you hit the wilderness or are staying in a dog friendly cottage, you will need to keep to the usual routine when it comes to feeding your dog. This is why you might want a portable feeding station to be with you all the time, so your dog can have meals at the usual time, and have their routine undisturbed.
Medication
In case your dog has travel sickness or has an allergy, maybe a health condition, you will need to visit the vet before you set off on an adventure, so you have all the medication you need to keep them happy and healthy. You might want to get some digestion aid in case they try a new plant in the park or the field and get an upset stomach. After all, you don’t want to spend all day caring for them when you are trying to enjoy your holiday.
Walking Accessories
You will also need to stick to your dog walking routine as much as you can during your holiday, so your dog doesn’t get confused. For this, you will need your usual treats, dog walking bags, and treat bags, so you can all enjoy the walks without having to worry about your dog getting lost or running away to chase wildlife.
Food and Treats
If you want to make the most out of your holiday, you should not change your dog’s diet while away. Pack the food and treats they are used to, and don’t try anything you are unsure of. You can get some safe plastic containers that will not make your bag and car smell like dog food, and might even set up or weigh the portions they are used to. Overfeeding your dog just to keep them calm is never a good idea.
Going on a holiday with a pet is just as challenging as taking a toddler with you. Ensure that you create an atmosphere and environment that most resembles home, so they feel safe and supported.
