Hey, y'all! How was your Memorial Day Weekend? Each Memorial Day my family gathers together at my parent's house for a barbecue. Since we're a military family, Memorial Day means a little more to us...but that doesn't mean we don't throw down and have a party. We're talking red, white and blue drinks, and patriotic inspired food galore. This year, to shake things up again, we had a Kabob Challenge. Everyone was asked to bring a kabob and a side-dish.

Obviously, the boys would gravitate to meat kabobs, so I went in a different direction and signed up to bring fruit kabobs. If you've popped into Maps & Monograms before, you may have noticed that I love working with fruit. Summertime is perfect for playing with different fruit recipes because everything is so fresh and juicy! Some of my favorite fruit dishes are Summer Tiramisu, Triple Berry Cheesecake Salad, and Grilled Watermelon & Feta Salad. I love these recipes because they either require no coooking or baking or involve grilling outside. Believe me, I'm not trying to stand over a hot stove over the summer!

But for real...for this recipe, I popped into the produce department and sought out all things red, white, and blue. I picked up strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, blackberries, and blueberries. I also grabbed some marshmallows to represent the white. Abe Lincoln would have been proud.

I began by cutting the watermelon into 1-inch slabs. I used a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut shapes into the watermelon. This works best with a fibrous watermelon. I cut the excess watermelon into cubes and set them aside for later (and also fed some to the dogs).

Next, I washed all of my fruit and began assembling the kabobs on bamboo skewers. I chose different combinations to form red, white, and blue patterns that way, there would be something for everyone's taste.

Once the kabobs were assembled, I threw a frogger on top of my Patriotic Mason Jars and stuffed the jars with the yummy kabobs. I also created an American flag out of some of the kabobs and laid them flat on a cutting board.

The end result was totally cute but totally not original. These little guys are all over Pinterest...and rightfully so. They are super cute, totally yummy and an easy way to add a little festivity to your summer bbq. My aunt ended up bringing the same thing to the party (haha). We had fruit galore! I went everyone home with a gallon size bag stuffed with delicious fruit kabobs.
