Eating Abroad: Making The Most of The Food on Vacation!

If you’re a bit of a foodie, one of the best things about going away on holiday is enjoying the different dining options! It’s a chance to try new ingredients, indulge a little and gain inspiration for your recipes when you’re back home. Here are just a few ways you can make the most of it and enjoy it as much as possible.

Enjoy street food from vendors

Street food is cheap and cheerful and gives you a taste of real, authentic ingredients when you visit a place. These kinds of vendors are often dotted around tourist areas and in markets and are well worth checking out. You could enjoy bratwurst from a stall in Germany or Dutch meatballs in Amsterdam. You could enjoy fried rice or noodles in Singapore- in fact, Singapore is home to food vendors that boast michelin stars! This was the first time a star was awarded to vendors by the prestige dining company.

Check out local cafes and restaurants

Avoid generic chain cafes and restaurants when you’re on holiday- you can eat this kind of food anywhere! Instead, check out independent cafes and restaurants, the kind of places you can only eat in in this particular destination. These sort of establishments will serve meals that are traditional to this place and using local ingredients. They’ll use cooking techniques that are specific to that location. From patisseries in Paris to risotto restaurants in Italy and carveries in England it’s the ideal way to appreciate the cuisine of a place.

Eat in the Hotel Restaurant

Hotels aren’t always the best option for places to stay. Whether it’s a secluded log cabin in Switzerland or a luxury apartment to rent in Marbella, sometimes you can find better accommodation than a standard hotel. However, if you do stay in a hotel (particularly if it’s a nice one) then it’s so worth checking out the hotel restaurant. They’re usually of an excellent standard and if you dine on the last evening it could be a great way to finish your trip. You could go all out with the three or four course option and use it as an excuse to really indulge.

Go for a picnic

One of the best things about going on holiday is that you’re jetting off to sunnier climes, and can enjoy some nice weather. So what better way to take advantage of it than by eating outdoors? Go to the local supermarket and have fun working out what different things are, prepare some sandwiches, salads and other snacks when you’re back in your hotel room and you can enjoy it out at the beach, park or gardens. You will be able to try some different ingredients and dining outdoors is always fun and enjoyable when it’s warm outside. This is also a great option if you’re on a budget, since it will cost less than booking a table somewhere.
