Costa Maya is an absolutely stunning corner of Mexico. The turquoise blue waters crash into the vibrant green jungle and the white sand beach to form some of the most beautiful beaches you'll ever encounter. Believe it or not, you can experience this port to the fullest without shelling out a ton of cash!
Hey, y'all! Costa Maya is a funky little Mexican port that is quickly becoming one of my favorite stops. Up until the early 2000's, Costa Maya was a quaint and humble fishing village. In 2001, developers transformed the area into a popular cruise ship destination. Getting here can be a little tricky. Often times, captains have to make the decision to skip the port simply because it is unsafe for them to dock the ship. That being said, if you're lucky enough to pull in here, you're in for a treat.
Costa Maya is one of the Carnival ports where you can get away without booking an excursion. Other ports like this include Mahogany Bay, Nassau, Grand Turk, Amber Cove and Half Moon Cay. Carnival has developed these ports as “destinations” and created a safe environment for cruisers to relax by the pool, spend some money in the shops or dine at restaurants. The developers of this port have done an absolutely incredible job of creating a space that is safe, fun and inexpensive for tourists.
There is plenty to do in Costa Maya, without having to book an expensive excursion. If you're looking for a cheap, low-key day my suggestion to you is to simply stay at the port area. The cruise port is a good size and there is plenty to do with activities ranging from Mayan drum performances, traditional papantla flying man ceremonies, visiting an aviary, scoping out the dolphin encounter and browsing in the countless shops. There's also a fish spa, a chocolate museum and a place where you can experience traditional Mayan healing rituals. The complex also features bars, restaurants and a saltwater pool with a swim up bar. You could easily spend your entire time here!
Near the rear of the complex is a taxi stand where you can catch a cab to the downtown area of the fishing village of Mahahual. The cost of the cab ride is super cheap, or you can opt for the $3 trolley ride or a 30 minute walk into town. Here the beach is a little less crowded (although the ship can accommodate up to 3 cruise ships so there are days when the beaches are packed). You can also peruse the shops or check out the local restaurants for fresh seafood and authentic Mexican cuisine.
No matter what you choose to do while in Costa Maya, you're sure to have a great time. This area is quickly becoming a haven for tourists and it's easy to see why. This little corner of Mexico is absolutely fabulous!
